Si Thep Historical Park

Si Thep Historical Park had been constructed during the prosperous ancient Khmer period. H.R.H. Prince Damrong found this city in B.E. 2448 (1905). Si Thep is surrounded by ditches and sand dikes. Si Thep City was divided into 2 parts; inside town has many large places of worship and outside town is situated in the east of the city. Si Thep City as a lot of archaeological objects such as Phra Narai (Vishnu) and Krisana graven images, stone inscription that its top side seems to be mushroom and was inscribed in "Kruen" letter but its bottom side was sharped. Besides, there are illustrations of Phra Sa Kaeo, Sa Kwan, Khao Klang, Pre - historical skeleton, etc.

Nam Nao National Park

General Information

Geography

Nam Nao covers the border between northeastern and  northern Thailand. Its particularly part of the Phetchabun mountainous range running through Chaiyaphum and Phetchabun provinces. Phu Phajit mountain is the tallest in the Park and topography comprises evergreen forests and streams. There are many rivers and streams within this important watershed area Pa Sak River is one of these, it eventually joins the Chao Praya River, others are Pong and Loei rivers and Khon Kaen and Nam Churn streams. All these flow into the Ubonrat Dam.

 Climate

 The mountains and forests create a cooler climate in the Park, particularly during the night and early morning. The daytime temperatures are very pleasant with an average annual temperature of 25 degree Celsius. Rainy season is between July and October. Cold season can be very cold, sometimes even with a frost and temperatures as low as 0 degree Celsius. The coldest month being November.

Flora and Fauna

The forest of Nam Nao contains many different forest types, including dipterocarp, deciduous, evergreen, hill evergreen and pine forest.

In the past the trees of this area such as have been important sources of money for the Thai economy. There are also many medicinal plants and orchids within the forest.

The forest structure within Nam Nao provides good shelter for animals including; tigers, leopard, asiatic black bear, malaysian sun bear, fox, porcupine, wildpig, guar, mouse deer and rabbits. These are distributed throughout the park. You will also notice signs (dung by the roadside) of the forest elephants and if lucky you may see one.

There are over 200 species of birds in the park. When out walking the trails you are likely to see birds such as parrots, hornbills, warblers, babblers and siamese firebacks. You will also encounter some of the 340 or so butterfly species that live in the park.

Nam Nao one of Thailand most beautiful Park covers an area within Amphur Mueang Lom Sak and Lom Kow in Phetchabun provice and Amphur Kornsan within Chaiyaphum province. The park Headquarters is in an unusual and fascinating landscape: deciduous forest dominated by tall pine trees.

The area is mountainous and its forests provide an important watershed for the surrounding districts. The Park covers in total an area of about 966 square Kilometres. The unusual and fascinating Park designated a National Park on the 4th May 1972.

Tourist attractions

 Phu Kor view point: In the cold season this is a good place to watch the sunrise, and from here you can see Phukradung national park and also Phu Pa Jit mountain within Nam Nao national park. There is a trail from the visitor center to this view point.

Tam Par Hong view point: From the road walk 300 meters to the view point where you will be rewarded with a good view. Walk a further 200 meters to a spot which is particularly good for watching the sunset.

Suan Son Ban park: This area has a large pine forest and grassland. There is a nature trail in the area.

Suan Son Phu Goom Kow: This area of tall pine trees as tall as 30 to 40 meters, covers an area of about 10 square kilometers.

Phu Goom Kow: A hill plateau of about 880 meters above sea level. From this hill people can see Chulabhorn reservoir formed by the dam.

Heaw Sai waterfall: A 20 meters high fall. The water comes from Sa Nam sai stream. This forms a natural border between Nam Nao and Khonsan districts.

Phu Pha Jit: The 1,271 meters high flat top mountain needs 6 to 7 hours hike to reach. The trail from the highway no. 12 (km mark 67) to the peak is a steep 7 km path.

There are limestone hills with good view points, caves and waterfalls in the park

How to get there: Park's headquarters is located 55 km east of Lomsak and 103 km west of Khon Kaen, on highway no. 12. There are buses from both Lomsak and Khon Kaen for the park.

Facilities: The Park has 10 bungalows ranging in size from 8 to 30 people. Tents are available for rent. There is a park restaurant.

King Naresuan the Great Shrine

King Naresuan the Great Shrine is situated at Tha Rong Sub-district. It is the enshrining venue of King Naresuan the Great statue, constructed by the people of Wichian Buri to commemorate the king’s honour in leading the troops to fight against the Khmer in this city. Their Majesties the King and the Queen also participated in the worshipping ceremony of King Naresuan the Great on 25 July, 1975. Every year, the District Office will organise a ceremony to celebrate the establishment of this shrine on the Royal Thai Armed Forces Day during 24-26 January.
 

To get there take Highway No. 21 (Lom Sak –Saraburi Road) for 5 kilometres from the Wichian Buri District Office.
 

Sweet Tamarind Fair: Sweet tamarind is grown mostly in Phetchabun due to the cool weather and suitable environment. Farmers gain a lot of income from tamarind, also it is the symbol of Phetchabun without arguing. [6]Sweet Tamarind Fair is thus organized in Phetchabun to celebrate the harvest of this fruit during January 17 - 25. This day is also called "Phetchabun’s Agriculture Day." During the festival, farmers bring their sweet tamarinds to sell at reasonable price at Phetchabun’s provincial athletic field where contests of sweet tamarinds and other crops are held. Besides this, there are other agricultural exhibitions and entertainments organized during the event
